Here blog number 2 about the IFES lecture by Maarten Vogelaar. In this blog the most important mental disorders of this moment:

 1. Burnout

Burnout is in our society mental disease number 1. Burnout is becoming more common and also at an ever younger age. In the age group 25-35 years, one in six now has burnout complaints and there are enough reasons to assume that this percentage will increase further. Burnout sounds like a luxury problem, but it's a social problem that occurs under all ages. But in the past we also worked hard, one could argue? But we have to examine the kind of work. It is not so much physical exhaustion that leads to a burnout. It is more the continuous claim we do on our minds. It is mental fatigue and has to do with our energy level.

2. Depression and other psychological complaints (loneliness, panic attacks, etc.)

38 percent (165 million) of Europeans suffer from depression, anxiety disorders, insomnia or dementia. 1 in 4 Belgians is being treated for depression or another psychiatric disorder. Dutch students also seem to be more sensitive to depression. The use of antidepressants in the age group 20-28 years has increased by as much as forty percent between 2007-2015. Although the latest reports are that last year's use has fallen for the first time in a long time. Half of the Dutch students had experience with psychological complaints in 2013, of which 23 percent had them at the time of research. The figures clearly indicate that depression and psychological complaints like loneliness, panic attacks play an important role in the lives of many.

3. Uncertainty

More and more people are flexing in permanent uncertainty and this has its downside. Life is generally characterized by little stability and a lot of incentives. Separation between work and private life hardly exists anymore. Social media are being used to draw attention to work and private life. And our holiday we use to get new ideas for our work. Many navigate between freedom of choice, uncertainty and performance pressure. Not only is the work unstable, fluid. Also housing, love and leisure. The paradox is that relationships are more intense than ever, but at the same time more unstable. And then there is pressure to get everything out of your life, and if that fails, it's because you're doing something wrong.
